History :: William Penn Landing Site
Prior to 1682, Chester was named Finlandia, and later Upton by the Swedes — the first European settlers on the site. William Penn landed in Upton on October 27, 1682 via his ship, Welcome. He renamed the settlement after the English city of Chester.
Today, the spot is marked with a permanent plaque and surrounding park.
